Douglas County Sheriff Loren Anderson planned two weeks to return inmates housed outside the county to the new county jail, which opened Saturday.

The job was done in four days instead.

As of Tuesday night, all 105 of the county's inmates were secure in the new $22 million Douglas County Jail southeast of Lawrence.

"We always knew we would do it when we had time," Anderson said. "It worked out we had the time."

The county has housed inmates outside of the county on a regular basis since 1993 due to overcrowding at the jail in the Douglas County Judicial and Law Enforcement Center.

The Judicial and Law Enforcement Center jail was emptied of its 54 inmates Saturday morning.

The remainder, some as far away as Labette County in southeast Kansas, have been moved in the days since.

Except for a computer slow down Saturday morning when the machine was doing its weekly backup and a delay in getting everyone showered as they came into the new jail, the move was uneventful, Anderson said.

The sheriff is still looking for a few more jailers to make up a full staff.
