Q. In regard to the bus that was ordered with the city's transportation money this last year, did that come off of the state bid list which is for state public transportation systems to also use?
A: The city hasn't purchased any buses with the federal funds it is allocated. A total of five vans have been purchased; two have been delivered and three should be delivered next week. The vehicles were purchased under the bid process that the city of Topeka used last year.
Q. I was calling to ask if it's legal for someone to run a commercial barbecue operation in their back yard. These people barbecue all weekend and then sell barbecue sauce, and the barbecue smoke infiltrates the entire neighborhood.
A: It would be illegal to run a commercial operation as described unless the area was zoned properly. Contact Zoning Inspector Lee Smith at 832-3107.
