To the editor:
I found out a few days ago that the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department plans to remove the existing playground equipment in Centennial Park (just west of Ninth and Iowa) upon completion of the new playground area. This is one of the few Lawrence playgrounds that is shaded during much of the day. It does not appear that the new equipment will be in the shade. I was told that the old equipment is being removed because it is considered unsafe. Given the concern these days about sunburn and skin cancer, removing one of the only shaded play areas in the city seems rather unsafe to me.

Expensive travel
To the editor:
The article on the KU plane accident indicated that three state employees were on their way to Emporia from Lawrence in the Cessna Citation when this accident occured. It would seem to be only fair if actual taxpayers and not just state employees were allowed use of this plane. Operating costs are only about $1,000 per hour and taxpayers could jet around to local destinations (such as Emporia) and eliminate those time-consuming drives we are forced (by lack of state employment) to make.
