On Sept. 15, 1899, the Lawrence World's headline read "The Truth of It" and the accompanying article stated: "The Kansas City Times says that an effort is being made to revive the nail industry at Lawrence which Congressman Bowersock sold out for $600,000 clear profit. Now it is time the truth of this transaction was known. Mr. Bowersock sold out for $2,000,000 clear profit. The agent of the trust met him on the street and handed him two one million-dollar bills. We know this is true for we were standing within 60 feet at the time of the occurrence, and Mr. Bowersock was so pleased that without moving from his place he reached into his pocket and handed us 30 cents. Now that the truth is known let us go about our business."
