A longtime office manager with Catholic Community Services was named winner of this year's Wallace Galluzzi Award for volunteerism.

Greta Georgeson, 69, was named recipient of this year's award.

"It was quite an honor," she said. "I was really not expecting it.

"I worked with Catholic Community Services for several years and also with the United Way, and I know what a wonderful thing they do for the community."

Georgeson was named winner of the award Sunday in conjunction with the "Day of Caring," a community volunteer program.

Georgeson, who is recovering from cancer, had to leave her work at CCS in July.

CCS is a counseling agency and offers support for single mothers, said director Marianne Gowen.

Georgeson had worked at the agency since 1981 and had donated at least 21,000 hours in volunteer time, Gowen said.

"What Greta did was just hold it all together," Gowen said. "She was very warm and caring for people who came there. She made everyone feel welcome and at home."

The Galluzzi award is given to a person who has done significant volunteer work in the last year for the United Way or one of its agencies.

It is named after the man who chaired the United Fund -- now the United Way -- in 1983 and was active in both leadership and service roles.
