Frederick award

Kansas' Bob Frederick and Kansas State's Max Urick will receive Neyland Athletics Director Awards at the All-America Football Foundation Banquet of Champions on Thursday in Chicago. Other active ADs to be honored are John Swafford of North Carolina and Bill Bradshaw of DePaul.

Weekend games

Kansas University's baseball team will have informal intrasquad games at 6 p.m. Friday, 2:30 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday in conjunction with Family Weekend.

Ex-Jayhawks shine

Two former Kansas University football players had interceptions in NFL games on Sunday. Arizona's Kwamie Lassiter picked off a pass that enable the Cardinals to post a 25-24 come-from-behind win over Philadelphia. And Tony Blevins of Indianapolis returned a theft 74 yards for a touchdown in the Colts' 31-14 win over Buffalo.

West stops Rural

in eighth grade football

West defeated Washburn Rural, 49-0, in eighth grade football Wednesday at West.

Cole Douglas scored on touchdown runs of three, 45 and 60 yards and also had a 20-yard fumble recovery for a score, two point run plus an interception.

Josh Davis returned a fumble 25 yards for a score and had a two-point run. Will Malcolm had a 15-yard TD run and extra point kick. Nathan Billings had a three-yard TD run. Kyle Unruh tallied a two-point run.

Ryan Ellis had a fumble recovery and Tyler Morgan a blocked punt. West, 2-0, will travel to Olathe Indian Trail next Tuesday.

Southwest wins, 18-0

Southwest stopped Olathe Pioneer Trail, 18-0, in eighth grade football on Tuesday at SW. Linebacker Tom Bush stripped a running back of the ball and ran 15 yards for a touchdown. Also, Marcus Murphy returned a punt 50 yards for a score. Ford Sypher scored on a 15-yard run, while Jimmy Lottes had an interception. SW, 2-0, will travel to KC Piper on Monday.

Veritas takes two

Veritas Christian School defeated Kansas School of the Deaf in a pair of volleyball matches on Tuesday. Veritas beat KSD 12-15, 15-6, 15-8 then 15-5, 15-12. Jennifer Nicholson and Kelsey Randall scored 10 and eight straight points respectively off their serves. Veritas, 2-0, will travel to Topeka Cair Paravel for a 4 p.m. match on Thursday.

Warner joins Redskins

Washington -- Former Kansas University linebacker Ron Warner was signed to the Washington Redskins' practice squad on Tuesday.

Phlegar takes sixth

for Free State golfers

Overland Park -- Free State High junior Lauren Phlegar placed sixth with a nine-hole 41 round Tuesday at the Overland Park Aquinas Invitational at Overland Park Golf Course.

The Firebirds finished fifth at the tournament with 197 strokes. Shawnee Mission Northwest won with 164.

Tess Lane shot a 49 and Libby Towner a 50 for the Firebirds.

LHS, led by Leslie Short (48) and Melissa Sigler (49), finished eighth with 205 strokes.

Next for the city schools is the Lawrence Invitational Thursday at Alavamar.

Free State JV loses

Free State High's JV soccer team fell to Olathe South, 3-1, on Tuesday at Free State. Kevon Sarrof scored off an assist by Tristan Green. Free State, 1-2-1, will meet SM West at 5:45 p.m. Thursday at FSHS.
