KU golfers have

big lead in Lincoln

Lincoln, Neb. -- Kansas fashioned a bulging 14-stroke lead after the first 36 holes of the Nebraska Fairway Club Invitational golf tournament on Monday.

Ryan Vermeer led the Jayhawks with a 68-67--135 that gave him a six-stroke lead in the medalist race.

Other KU scores were Andy Stewart 73-71--144, Conrad Roberts 76-74--150, Brad Davis 78-74--152, Chris Marshall 81-73--154 and Jake Istnick 82-77--159.

Kansas leads Missouri by 14 strokes, and California and Colorado State by 15 shots. The final 18 holes are today. Results in Scoreboard.

KU women golfers

tied for seventh

Lincoln, Neb. -- Kansas women's golf team was tied for seventh with Kansas State after the first 36 holes of the Big 12 Conference fall preview on Monday.

Sarah Mahoney led the Jayhawks with a 74-76--150 that was only four strokes off the lead.

Other KU scores were Susan Tessary 79-79--158, Tiffany Kruggel 82-80--162, Ashely Bishop 85-84--169 and Heather Rose 87-83--170.

The tourney will conclude with 18 holes today. Results in Scoreboard.

South eighth stops

Northern Hills, 38-14

South defeated Topeka Northern Hills, 38-14, in eighth grade football Monday at South.

Drew Cummings scored on 40- and 10-yard pass receptions from Taylor Parker and also caught a pair of two-point conversion passes from Parker. John Davis scored on 4- and 5-yard runs and had a two-point run. Also, Brett Urban scored on a 50-yard run and Andy Stiles on a two-point pass from Joe Crane. Jack Bell had an interception and Isaac Severance and Cummings fumble recoveries.

LHS netters drop

three in Topeka

Topeka -- Lesley Johnson was the only Lawrence High winner as the Lions dropped three tennis matches on Monday at Topeka Washburn Rural.

Topeka West stopped LHS, 3-1, as Johnson won at No. 1 singles. The Lions bowed to both Washburn Rural and Topeka High by scores of 4-0.

Lawrence's other participants were Kristin Wong at No. 2 singles, Allison Ramirez and Nicole Wilcox at No. 1 doubles, and Lindsay Sullivan and Jen Baum at No. 2 doubles.

Southwest ninth falls

Shawnee Heights defeated Southwest, 20-0, in ninth grade football on Monday at Southwest. Nick Giannakis, Brian Seymour and Chris Laing recovered fumbles for the Bulldogs. Southwest (1-2) will entertain SM South on Sept. 23.
