To the editor:
I thought the letter to the editor in the Sept. 10 Journal-World was absolutely wrong! It hinted that maybe the Journal-World, and for that matter all non-American Indians, are stereotypical of American Indians. Supposedly everyone that reads the Journal-World is being led to believe that only American Indians that are involved in a deadly accident with alcohol involved will be photographed and written about in the paper. This is one of the most insane comments I have heard in a long time.
It seems to me that almost every injury accident that occurs in and around the Lawrence area is shown in one way or another in the Journal- World. I believe that the Journal-World does an excellent job with the articles they write concerning these matters. I think it would be a help, not a hindrance, to know that someone was involved in an accident. You never know, you might know the person.
Race has exactly nothing to do with the articles written in the Journal-World. The facts of the accident are told and if alcohol is involved it should be made known to the community. So if HINU or anyone else was offended by what was written or shown in the Journal-World concerning the accident in North Lawrence, maybe you should try reading the Journal-World on a regular basis and realize this wasn't, and will not be, the only accident involving alcohol printed in the Journal-World.
Matt L. Withers,
Lawrence.
