ERRANT PEDESTRIANS

To the editor:

I want to thank Brett Garland for the wonderful photograph on page 1A of the Sept. 8 Journal-World. He captured something I see more often than I'd like to believe -- pedestrians crossing on a red light.

It's my understanding that red lights mean the same for pedestrians and drivers: stop until the light is green. A solid red light doesn't mean "go if nothing is coming!" (If it's a flashing red light, that's different.)

You may wonder why I'd make such a big deal about such a seemingly small thing.

1. Because it's the law. (Ask yourself if you'd do that if you saw a police officer on that corner. Christians, WWJD?) If you don't like the law, work to change it.

2. Because the same person who walks on a red light may just decide to drive on a red light also.

3. Because children are learning by the example set by adults that if something is inconvenient or distasteful, one can just ignore it.

4. Because you surely can't be in such a hurry that the time spent waiting would significantly reduce your quality of life.

So, as long as you continue to disregard the red lights, I hope you'll forgive me for my outbursts on my horn or my ear-piercing shrieks. Thank you.

For those of you who choose to respect all traffic signals, my hat's off to you. Thank you very much! When I observe you, I am thrilled more than words can say.

Verna Froese,

Lawrence.
