Bone loss
topic of program
By age 75, nine in 10 women and one in three men are affected by bone loss. While it doesn't usually kill people outright, it is a contributing cause of malnutrition, pneumonia, and loss of independence due to broken bones and lost mobility.
K-State Research and Extension-Douglas County, in cooperation with the Family and Community Education Council, is sponsoring the educational program, "Bone Bank Deposits and Withdrawals," which begins at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Douglas County Extension Center, at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.
Diane Burnett, Miami County Extension agent in family and consumer sciences, will provide information on how diet, exercise and other measures can prevent and treat this chronic, crippling disease -- osteoporosis. Following the presentation, a variety of dishes rich in nutrients needed to build strong bones will be sampled.
To preregister for this program, contact Douglas County Extension, 843-7058, by noon Thursday. A minimal fee will be charged to those not bringing an assigned dish.
