Motor vehicle accidents and their attendant expenses cost Lawrence residents more than $1 million the past year, a record figure for the community, according to the National Safety Council.
Four-year-old Joh Gaines of Richland had survived radical surgery for a heart condition and had a massive "cupid bow" scar across his chest to show for it. He appeared to be recovering satisfactorily. He had three sisters.
His mother said he was "like a jack-in-the-box," in that he had "popped up soon after the surgery, and has been on the go ever since. He's remarkable."
