Kansas University's volleyball team beat Chicago State, 3-0, then fell to Texas Christian University, 3-2, on Friday night at the Hampton Inn Jayhawk Classic contested at KU's Horejsi Family Athletics Center.
The split gives Kansas a 5-1 record on the season.
In the first match, the Jayhawks dominated the Cougars 15-4, 15-7 and 15-3. KU was led by junior newcomer Sara Kidd, who had nine kills to go with five digs.
Sophomore setter Molly LaMere paced the team with 44 assists.
The second match pitted Kansas against Texas Christian, a team which came in with a record of 1-6, but had faced tough competition.
The Horned Frogs outlasted KU 5-15, 15-13, 9-15, 15-10, 15-5.
Junior outside hitter Amy Myatt led Kansas with 20 kills, while LaMere added 52 assists and 10 digs in the match.
"We had 18 service errors, and they had nine, and that's pretty much the storyline right there. I think TCU thought if they could get the match to game five, they'd be in good shape, and that's exactly what happened."
Kansas continues play in the Classic tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. against Auburn.
