HOW THEY SCORED

First quarter

10:24 -- Nate Vail 21 run. After Jeremiah Feurt intercepted a pass on Olathe South's first play, Vail kept the option for the score. The quarterback was sprung loose on Shaun Flynn's down-field block. Vail kick. (Free State 7, Olathe South 0).

10:12 -- Jason Santifer 89 kickoff return. On the ensuing kickoff, Santifer burst up the middle, put a move on Vail and scampered for the score. Jeff Clark kick. (Free State 7, Olathe South 7).

9:16 -- Jake Lawrence 76 run. Two plays after the Falcons tied the game, Lawrence took the hand-off to his left and split Olathe South defenders Josh Perkins and Josh Humphrey. Vail kick. (Free State 14, Olathe South 7).

7:32 -- Nate Proctor 4 run. Olathe South mounted the first drive of the game, needing five plays to go 60 yards in 1:37. Proctor scored up the middle untouched. Clark kick. (Free State 14, Olathe South 14).

2:38 -- Santifer 5 pass from Travis Jackson. Free State was stopped for the first time, turning the ball over on downs, and Olathe South capitalized. The Falcons marched 52 yards in seven plays as Jackson found Santifer wide open in the end zone. Clark kick. (Olathe South 21, Free State 14).

Second Quarter

11:20 -- Nate Schmidt 28 pass from Jackson. The Falcons capitalized on another Firebird miscue, cashing in on a fumble recovery by Santifer. Jackson rolled to his left and found Schmidt on the sideline for the score. Clark kick. (Olathe South 28, Free State 14).

6:09 -- Lawrence 2 run. Free State answered, traveling 77 yards in 16 plays and using 5:04. The key play was an illegal substitution penalty on Olathe South on a fourth-and-five play. Vail did most of the work, with three carries for 22 yards and was 2-for-5 passing for 26 yards. Kick failed. (Olathe North 28, Free State 20).

2:38 -- T.K. Peterson 33 pass from Vail. The Firebirds finally drew even with the Falcons, needing just five plays to go 47 yards in 1:48. Vail found Peterson in the end zone, and the senior tight end leaped to make the catch. Chris Wheatley run. (Free State 28, Olathe South 28).

44.5 -- Proctor seven run. Olathe South quickly regained the lead, though, on a lengthy 10-play, 65-yard drive that only took 1:49. The key play was a roughing-the-passer penalty tacked on at the end of a 10-yard pass play that moved the Falcons to the Firebirds' 9-yard line. Kick blocked by Tay Ogunnowo. (Olathe South 34, Free State 28).

Third Quarter

5:53 -- Schmidt 15 pass from Jackson. Olathe South upped its advantage to 14 points after Schmidt's grab capped a 10-play, 58-yard drive on the Falcons' first possession of the second half. Isom Winton run. (Olathe South 42, Free State 28).

2:22 -- Lawrence 77 pass from Vail. After Olathe South turned the ball over on downs, Free State needed just one play to respond. Vail hit Lawrence with a pass while Peterson and Jeff Dougherty had key blocks downfield. Vail kick. (Olathe South 42, Free State 35).

Fourth Down

10:35 -- Jensen 27-yard field goal. After the two teams exchanged fumbles, and the Falcons regained possession on the Firebirds' 17-yard line, Olathe South scored its final points of the game. (Olathe South 45, Free State 35).

10:24 -- Peterson 80 pass from Vail. Again, it took Free State just one play to answer. Lawrence went in motion to his right, Vail faked a pitch to Wheatley and hit a wide-open Peterson with a pass and the tight end outraced the defense. Vail kick. (Olathe South 45, Free State 42).

8:52 -- Lawrence 75 run. Free State's defense forced Olathe South to three-plays-and-out (the final play being a quick kick on third down) and the Firebirds' offense made the most of the opportunity, regaining the lead on their first play. Vail kick. (Free State 49, Olathe South 45).

41.9 -- Lawrence four run. Free State put the game out of reach after forcing Olathe South to turn the ball over on downs, as Lawrence pounded the ball up the middle three times in a row for eight yards. The key play was Vail's 19-yard scamper with a face-mask penalty. Vail kick. (Free State 56, Olathe South 45).
