KC Pembroke Hill

dominates Lions

Lawrence High won only one tennis match all Thursday afternoon against Kansas City, Mo., powerhouse Pembroke Hill at the Lawrence Tennis Center.

Pembroke Hill won the varsity match, 8-1, and captured the JV competition, 10-0.

The Lions' lone victory came in No. 1 doubles when Brooke Seymour and Lisa Dixon posted a 9-7 victory. Results in Scoreboard.

Free State wins

Topeka -- Free State High's tennis team won the Highland Park quadrangular tournament on Thursday.

Free State totaled 11 points, finishing ahead of Highland Park (7), Topeka West (5) and Gardner-Edgerton (1).

Laura Gravino went 3-0 and Sandi Biszantz 2-1 to place first and second respectively in singles. The teams of Susie Epp and Kim Heck and Katie Bushouse and Kylie Renberger each went 3-0 to win doubles titles.

FSHS sophs fall

Olathe South defeated Free State's sophomore football team, 26-14, on Thursday at FSHS. Walker Douglas scored on a 40-yard pass from Andron Cruse. Also, Cruse scored on a 30-yard run and Brandon Jackson a 2-point run. FSHS, 0-2, will travel to Manhattan next Thursday.

LHS sophs win

Topeka -- Justin Larsen and Josh Hought scored goals as Lawrence High nipped Topeka High, 2-1, in sophomore soccer on Thursday. Josh Lorenzo assisted on Hought's goal. Alex Hosek was in goal for the Lions, 2-1-1. Andrew Blackford was cited for his defensive play.

Lion JV wins, 3-1

Lawrence High's JV soccer team defeated SM West, 3-1, on Thursday at YSI. Jamie Peterson scored three goals. Aaron Payne, Michael Weil and Ventsi Ivanov had assists. Steve Bagwell and Josh Yurek were cited for strong defense. The Lions improved to 1-2-1.

FSHS JV loses

Washburn Rural blanked Free State, 2-0, in junior varsity soccer on Thursday at the FSHS field. Kayvon Sarraf and Matt Fisher were cited for their play for the Firebirds, 1-1-1.

Perry Middle splits

Perry -- Nolan Putnam rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns, and Mitch McPherson added 53 yards and a TD as Perry Middle School's eighth-grade football team beat Kansas City Piper, 20-6, on Thursday. Perry's seventh grade fell to Piper, 20-6.

Manhattan sophs win

Manhattan -- Manhattan defeated Lawrence High's sophomore football team, 46-28, on Thursday. For LHS, Bill Peterson scored on a one-yard run; Kyle Coleman an eight-yard pass from Paul Houle; Houle on a five-yard run and Dallas Worley a 98-yard interception return. Higgins contributed a two-point conversion run and caught a two-point pass from Houle. LHS, 1-1, will travel to SM West next Thursday.

Correction

Because of incorrect information provided to the Journal-World, Free State junior varsity soccer player Bryan Spangler's name was misspelled in Thursday's Journal-World.
