— Free State High's volleyball team won two matches and lost one in its season debut on Thursday at SM East.

"We blocked really well. We were not consistent," Free State coach Nancy Hopkins said after the Firebirds beat SM South 15-10, 15-12 and SM East 15-10, 15-8 and lost to SM Miege 8-15, 10-15.

Sarah Graves, Joyia Chadwick and Alison Lungstrom blocked well, according to coach Nancy Hopkins.

"I don't think we played nearly as well as we're capable of playing," Hopkins said. "For most of the evening we had three people out there who have not started a varsity match or ever played in a varsity match. We got a lot of playing time for our two sophomores and two juniors who never played varsity before. In the long run that will help us. They are getting a lot of playing time."

Against Miege, Alexis Bliss rolled an ankle. She will have X-rays taken today.

Free State will travel to Olathe North on Thursday.
