Matt Noonan

School: Baldwin.

Year: Sophomore.

Sport: Cross country.

Noonan, the Class 4A state runner-up last fall, appears primed to make another run at the state's top prize. He won the season-opening Anderson County Invitational last week in 16 minutes, 54 seconds to lead the Bulldogs to the team title with 57 points.

"That time was about 1:06 quicker than what he ran there last year," BHS coach Mike Spielman said. "He had a good summer. He was the AAU national champion in the 1,500. He has a lot of confidence right now. He's pretty excited about it."

Next for Noonan and Baldwin is Saturday's Wamego Invitational. Wamego is also the site of the Class 4A state meet on Oct. 30. Ulysses' Derek Garza, who beat Noonan by two seconds to win state a year ago, is scheduled to run in Wamego.
