MICHAEL D. CNOSSEN
Topeka -- Mass of Christian Burial for Michael D. Cnossen, 55, Topeka, will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Topeka. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery, Tecumseh, with military honors by a detail from Fort Riley.
Mr. Cnossen died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, in Topeka in an accident.
He was born Oct. 31, 1943, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Billy and Virginia (Payne) Cnossen. He received a bachelor's degree from Iowa State University and a master's degree in business administration from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. He had lived in Topeka since 1979.
Mr. Cnossen served in the Marines during the Vietnam War, receiving the Navy Commendation Medal and the Purple Heart.
He owned and operated the Toy Moon store, Lawrence, and previously held positions in the health and banking fields. He and his wife were Peace Corps volunteers from 1976 to 1978.
He was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church and was active in youth soccer in Topeka and with downtown Lawrence activities.
He married Alice K. England on Nov. 27, 1971, near Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Daniel, Annapolis, Md.; a daughter, Leslie Alane Cnossen, of the home; his father and stepmother, Billy and Tresa Cnossen, Washington, Iowa; a brother, Jim, Marion, Iowa; and four sisters, Sara Ross and Jean Glandon, both of Washington, Iowa, Joan Barrios, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Mary Jo Turnipseed, Apple Valley, Calif.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the church, where a prayer service will be held at 3 p.m. Friends may also call from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Highland Chapel, Topeka.
The family suggests memorials to St. Matthew's Catholic Church, 2700 SE Virginia, Topeka 66605, or the Lawrence Arts Center for children's scholarships, and they may be sent in care of Penwell-Gabel Highland Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota, Topeka 66605.
