COUNTY FALLS SHORT

To the editor:

I applaud Dave Ranney's article "County a haven for deadbeats" and, too, have gotten nowhere with the judicial system in Douglas County. I don't know why something can't be done. My divorce was granted six and a half years ago and a total of only eight payments were made in all this time.

No, I am not on welfare, nor do I receive food stamps or a medical card. I work 40 hours a week, plus all the overtime I can get. If it wasn't for a caring and helpful family, my child wouldn't get new clothes for school and the medication he needs every day.

The SRS department needs to get rid of the "hearing officers" who do absolutely nothing to enforce the law. Go sit in Johnson County Child Support hearings and you'll be amazed! Two slaps on the wrist and a third time you go to jail. After that, they put you on a release program where you work, so much is given out for that person to live on and the remainder of that paycheck is sent directly to the courts. You can't tell me the law varies that much from county to county. Wake up, Douglas County!

I was also to receive medical insurance on my child by my ex but so far have received none! Try having $250 a month taken out of your paycheck for dependent coverage for an illness associated in the leukemia family and trying to make your paycheck stretch. It hurts to see my ex be able to own a home plus acreage and owe me thousands of dollars in child support. Maybe he doesn't worry about where the next pair of shoes comes from, but I do.

Tina Price,

DeSoto.
