Salvation Army
Lt. Kirk Schuetz will preach at the 10:30 a.m. service Sunday at The Salvation Army Church, 946 N.H. The sermon is "The Mother a Child Needs," based on Proverbs 31:10-31. Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m. Midweek Bible study will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
First Presbyterian
The Rev. Nancy Thellman will give the sermon, based on Romans 14:1-12, during the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship services Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Pkwy. Church school begins at 9:30 a.m. Junior high youth group meets at 5 p.m. Senior high youth group meets at 6:30 p.m. There will be a dinner at 6 p.m. for both youth groups.
Veritas Christian School
The board and faculty retreat of Veritas Christian School will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Carriage House, 843 Tenn.
Volleyball season begins this week at Veritas, 256 N. Mich. The team's first game will begin at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kansas School for the Deaf.
First Baptist
The Rev. Marcus McFaul will preach on "Building the Church " Through Christian Formation" Sunday, the 16th Sunday after Pentecost, at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold. Worship services are at 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Christian education classes are at 9:30.
In the first service, Ken Rodgers, former music director at First Baptist, will offer special music. In the second service, the chancel choir sings "Come Build A Chancel" and baptism will be celebrated. Kansas University students are invited to the Welcome Back Luncheon following the second service.
Southside
Church of Christ
Pulpit minister Mark Abshier will share the sermon "Back to Church" during the 10:30 a.m. worship service Sunday at Southside Church of Christ, 25th and Missouri streets. Sunday school classes for all ages are at 9:30 a.m. A second service is at 6 p.m. Bible study classes for every age group are at 7 p.m. Wednesdays. Call 843-0770 for information.
Lawrence Aglow
Linda Garman, Northeast Kansas Area Aglow president, is the featured speaker this month's Lawrence Aglow meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday at 3200 Clinton Pkwy. Garman will share her story of how God is teaching her to come up fighting when she falls down. The public is invited to attend. There is no charge but a free-will offering will be taken.

Christ Community
Evangelical Free
The Rev. Beau Abernathy's message at the 8:30 am., 9:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services Sunday at Christ Community Evangelical Free, 1449 Kasold, will be on "Stolen Property." Beginning this Sunday the Adult Bible Fellowship will be studying "How To Manage Your Money." The group meets at 9:45 a.m. in office No. 4 at the Orchards Corner.
Children and youth Sunday school begins at 9:45 a.m., and children's church begins at 11:00 a.m. Senior high youth Bible fellowship meets at 9:45 a.m. at the Classic Gourmet coffee shop. The youth group, Oasis, meets at the church from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Redeemer Lutheran
The Rev. J.W. Watson will preach on the theme "Love and Forgiveness Amongst Pagans and Tax Collectors" from Matthew 18:15-20 at the 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services Sunday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2700 Lawrence Ave. The order of service will be from the Lutheran Hymnal. Sunday school and Bible class are at 9:45 a.m. A speaker from Lutheran Bible Translators will show a slide presentation on his missionary work in Africa.
The Women's LWML will begin its first fall meeting with a salad supper at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
Midweek school and women's Bible study will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The adult choir will rehearse at 7:30 p.m.
Ushers will meet at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 18.
Unitarian Fellowship
The evolution controversy, as presented by Tim Miller, chairman of the Kansas University department of religious studies, will be the topic for the first fall meeting of Lawrence Unitarian Fellowship at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The Fellowship meets at 1263 N. 1100 Rd. Time for discussion will be provided after the presentation and during the informal coffee that follows.
Religious education for elementary school, junior high and high school students will be available during the regular meeting. Infant and preschool care is also available.
An informal discussion group will meet at 9:30 a.m. to study the testament video series on the history of the Bible.
