On Sept. 10, 1899, the Lawrence World discussed football at Haskell and stated that "A great interest is being taken in football at Haskell Institute this season and the success of Sal Walker and his braves last season inspire the boys this year to outdo their previous year." A former KU player "Shorty" Hamil was being counted on to provide a coaching boost.
