TAX AND SPEND

To the editor:

Actual property taxes charged against a $100,000 home in 1998 were $1,086. This same house, due to both an increase in valuation and the increase in the mill levy, will this year require a tax payment of $1,228. This represents an increase of $142 which amounts to a 13 percent growth in property taxes on one's home. This information was published in the Journal-World on Aug. 21, page 1B.

With the consumer price index being less than 2 percent compared to the 13 percent increase in property taxes, it seems to highlight and underscore the need for some state legislation to cap property tax increases.

The Lawrence school district's $80 million budget to educate just over 10,000 students seems to me to be a good example of tax and spend which permeates many public bodies. How much more do you suppose they will want next year?

Don Cashatt,

Lawrence.
