Flames Tryouts: Tryouts for Lawrence Flames girls basketball are scheduled at various times and locations. Fourth through seventh grade girls sessions will be on Sept. 18-19 while eighth grade and over will try out on Sept. 25-26. For specifics, call Wint Winter Jr. or Cheryl Abney at 843-0811.

Hoop-It-Up Standouts: Emily Brown of Baldwin and Lauren Kracl of Eudora were members of the KC Magic team that won the ages 13-14 NBC Hoop-It-Up tournament at Arrowhead Stadium.

  • LYABA to Begin: Lawrence Young American Bowling Alliance leagues will begin on Saturday at Royal Crest Lanes. Interested bowlers who haven't registered can sign up 15 minutes before scheduled meetings at 8:30 a.m. (ages 12-21) and 9:30 a.m. (ages 8-11). For information, call Mike Miller at 864-5626.

  • Conroy Blitzes Field: Randy Conroy of Lawrence blistered Alvamar with a 67 and won the Jayhawk Golf Club Stableford Scoring System tournament last Sunday. Chris Conroy was second and Mark McAlister third. Chris Conroy shot an 86 and McAlister an 84. Randy Conroy's score was the lowest ever recorded in JGC competition.

  • Plumlee Medalist: Dick Plumlee of Lawrence was a member of the U.S. National Masters canoe team that won three silver medals and a bronze at the World Championships in Nottingham, England, last month. Earlier in August, Plumlee finished fifth in the 15-mile marathon C-1 masters race at Niles, Mich.

  • Wehrheim Winner: Joe Wehrheim of Lawrence won the Leawood Labor Day 5K in a time of 16:09. Lawrence's Ned Ryun won the men's ages 25-29 competition in 16:27 and Dee Boeck captured the women's 50-54 category in 21:54.

  • LTC Parents Meeting: Lawrence Track Club will hold a parents meeting at 4 p.m. Sunday at the public library auditorium. Officers will be elected and the upcoming season will be discussed. For information, call Denis Yoder at 749-7271.

  • KCAM Clinics: Kansas Center for Athletic Medicine will conduct sports injury clinics for junior high and high school athletes on Saturday mornings during the fall season. For information, call Randy Freivogel at 843-9125.

  • Baldwin's Hedges Wins: Priscilla Hedges of Baldwin won the women's championship at the Kansas Horseshoe Pitching Championships last weekend in Ottawa. Hedges had 61.74 percent ringers. Lawrence's Wynne Mihura was third with 57.14 ringers. In the elder men's division, Charles Pringle of Lawrence was second to Melvin Bray of Pittsburg. Bray hit 66.54 percent to Pringle's 61.3 percent.

  • Heitzman Sets Record: Paul Heitzman of Eudora won the ages 65-69 division of the Warriors Challenge 12K last Monday in Pawnee, Okla. His time of 52:00 was an American record for 68-year-olds. The old mark was 53:58.

  • Salb Two-Time Champ: Mount Holyoke College's Amanda Salb became a two-time NCAA champion when she won the Div. III shot put with a personal best of 47-5 last May. Salb is the daughter of former Kansas University shot putter Karl Salb and the former Jessie Riddle of Lawrence. Salb also played basketball for the Massachusetts school and set career records in rebounds and steals.
