On Sept. 9, 1899, the Lawrence World commenting on the debate over what should be used as the base material under brick paving observed: "It is so manifestly unfair to charge that the advocates of a macadam base are knockers on street paving that the unfairness will be the death of the report. There is no fight on street paving. Indeed all want it. It does seem, however, that if macadam is so good that the brick people are afraid it will be left permanently it is pretty well commended. No one contends that concrete will be that good."
