HELEN MARIE SMITH
Topeka -- Services for Helen Marie (Newman) Smith, 67, will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Bowser-Johnson Funeral Chapel in Topeka. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka.
Mrs. Smith died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at her home.
She was born Jan. 13, 1932, in Lawrence, the daughter of Verner and Rachel Gazell (Gibson) Newman Jr. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1950.
Mrs. Smith had been a cook for the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and Alpha Delta Pi sorority at Kansas University, and had worked for Summer Headstart at Belvoir School and Smith and Ford Laundries, both of Topeka.
She was a member of the St. James A.M.E. Church, Lawrence, and was on the trustee board, senior choir and finance committee. She attended Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church, Topeka, and was also a member of Siloam Chapter No. 10 Order of Eastern Star, Chloe Green Court No. 27 Heroine of Jericho, American Legion Women's Auxiliary, Ewing Jones No. 12 and the Entre Nous Charity Club, all of Lawrence.
She married Richard Leon Smith on Dec. 26, 1961, in Lawrence. He survives of the home.
Other survivors include two daughters, Carolyn C. Ross and Marie A. Smith-Williams, both of Topeka; four sons, Gregory L. Newman, Oakland, Calif., Allan F. Williams, Roswell, Ga., and Richard W. Smith and Roger D. Smith, both of Topeka; a stepson, Mike L. Smith, Lewisville, Tex.; two stepdaughters, Sherrie Smith, Lakeland, Fla., and Tonya Smith, Newport News, Va.; a sister, Charleen Coleman, Lawrence; two brothers, Verner Newman III, and Charles E. Newman, both of Lawrence; 11 grandchildren; and 5 stepgrandchildren.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to the Saint James Church, and they may be sent in care of Charleen Coleman.
