Former Kansas University basketball player Thomas Joseph (T.J.) Pugh appeared in court Wednesday for a driving under the influence of alcohol charge.
Pugh, 23, told District Court Judge Robert Fairchild he is seeking a diversion for the charge, and has scheduled an alcohol evaluation later this month. Diversions allow first-time offenders to avoid a conviction if they complete a program involving an alcohol class and pay court fees.
He was stopped about 2:30 a.m. Aug. 27 on North 1500 road, about 1 1/2 miles east of Lawrence.
He was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated and failure to provide proof of insurance. He posted a $500 bond less than an hour later and was released from the Douglas County Jail.
Fairchild entered a not guilty plea in the case, and Pugh will appear in court again at 1:30 p.m. Oct 6. That plea will be dropped if the diversion is granted.
