The number of homes sold in Douglas County skyrocketed last month, and average sale prices continued to increase.
A total of 195 single-family homes were sold in August, up 27.5 percent from the 153 sold a year ago, according to a new report from the Douglas County appraiser's office.
The average price was up, too. Homes in the county sold for an average $133,852 last month, up 8.3 percent from $123,615 a year ago.
In Lawrence, August's 155 homes sales represented a 16.5 percent increase from the 133 sales closed a year earlier. Last month's average sale price of $136,534 was up 9.4 percent from the $124,818 average a year ago.
Builders appear to be taking note of the growing market. A separate report showed the city issued 22 building permits during August for construction of single-family homes in Lawrence, up 22 percent from the 18 issued a year earlier.
Sales in other residential categories for the county also were up in August. Eight condominiums sold for an average $58,625, up from the three sold a year earlier for an average $51,500; a dozen apartments also sold during the month, up from eight a year earlier, but the average price fell to $92,300 from $116,113.
Also from the appraiser's report for August:
- Eudora had 11 sales for an average of $118,205, up from two for a $99,500 average a year earlier.
- Baldwin had 10 sales for an average of $112,882. That's up from two sales a year earlier for an average $106,250.
- Rural areas had 14 sales for an average $141,007. That's up from 13 sales a year ago for an average $132,450.
