Lawrence High and Free State High have been gym dandy through the first 3 1/2 weeks of practice with twice as many gymnasts out this year compared to last fall.

Just 11 girls competed last year and the turnout has increased to 22.

"They're a larger group and it makes for some competition within the squad," said Kathy Johnson, co-head coach with Suzie Godsil for both schools.

The Lions and Firebirds will open at 6 p.m. today with a quadrangular at Free State. Shawnee Mission East and SM Northwest will also attend.

Senior Amanda Rose is the Lions' top returning gymnast. She placed fourth at state on the uneven bars after finishing third at regional and second at the Sunflower League meet.

Junior Shandi Reeves is also back for LHS. Rose, Reeves, freshman Molly Hoss and sophomore Allison Wright are expected to compete as all-around gymnasts.

"Lawrence High has a strong team," Johnson said. "The five varsity spots are much more competitive and there's good ability there."

For Free State, senior Erin Hickey has emerged as the Firebirds' top gymnast. She concentrated on club gymnastics last fall and didn't go out for the high school team.

"She's a strong all-around gymnast," Johnson said.

Senior Natalie Kolatch is another all-around gymnast for the Firebirds.

Though LHS and FSHS practice together, the two squads will split for competition. The Lions and Firebirds have been practicing three days a week at LHS and twice a week at FSHS. Free State provides the same equipment that LHS does except for the uneven bars.

How has that routine worked?

"Lawrence High is quite a bit warmer than Free State," Johnson said of the LHS mat room, which is not air-conditioned. "We've spent a fairly equal amount of time at both schools. We try to make the girls feel like gymnastics is a part of both schools."

A total of nine freshmen are listed on the rosters.

"That's encouraging because it shows there is an interest in the sport," Johnson said.

LHS will play host to two meets -- an all-around invitational on Oct. 4 and a quadrangular on Oct. 6. Free State will also play host to a regional on Oct. 7.

Johnson is pleased with the high number of home events.

"It makes it funner because the kids at school can watch them," she said.
