To the editor:

I would like to commend the Lawrence City Commission for deciding to halt developer Stuart Doores' plans to build a housing development along the eastern boundary of the city's sanitary sewer system. (See Journal-World article, "Hog-tied developer raises stink" in the Sept. 28 paper.)

It is the commission's job to protect taxpayers from the excessive infrastructure costs of unchecked growth along the urban growth boundaries. Though I can sympathize with Mr. Doores' unresearched purchase of the plot, it has never been the responsibility of city government or taxpayers to remunerate individuals for their mistakes. His threats to retaliate by building a hog farm in the area seem, at best, childish.

Kelly Barth,

Lawrence.
