IN 1899
On Sept. 8, 1899, the Lawrence World told of a controversy regarding what should be used as the base material under the soon-to-be laid brick paving. The city engineer Holland Wheeler recommended that instead of concrete, macadam should be used. The World told of a city council decision adopting macadam. The under construction brick plant in the city had generated a great deal of concern over this decision for some reason according to the World.
