Nowata, Okla. -- Services for John Richard David Bates, 82, Nowata, Okla., will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, Nowata. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Nowata.

Mr. Bates died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at the Jane Phillips Medical Center, Bartlesville, Okla.

He was born Aug. 2, 1917, in Welch, Okla., the son of Carl Everett Bates and Icy (Newman) Bates.

Mr. Bates served in the Navy during World War II.

He owned and operated Johnny's Electronics in Nowata for 25 years. He also worked for Benjamin Funeral Service and Dugan's Furniture in Nowata, as a Nowata city police officer and as a tag agent for Nowata County.

He was a member and vice mayor of the Nowata City Council and a volunteer member of the Nowata EMS 10-33 Emergency Team.

He was a past president of the Nowata Lions Club and American Legion Post No. 101, Nowata. Mr. Bates helped organize the Nowata chapter of the American Association of the Retired People and was that chapter's first president. He was secretary-treasurer of Senior Citizens, Nowata, and a member of the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Bates married Lucille M. McGee on Nov. 12, 1938. She died May 27, 1970. A daughter, Joan Lavina Bates, and a son, Jerold Lee Bates, also died earlier.

He married Violet Riff Ward on June 2, 1972. She survives at the home.

Other survivors include four sons, W. David, Tulsa, Okla.; Richard J., Tijera, N.M.; Allen R., Tulsa; and Robert G., Lawrence; a stepson, Dewey E. Ward, Bartlesville; three stepdaughters, Patty E. Taylor, Bartlesville; Pamela Sloan, Tulsa; Penny D. Lawrence, Tulsa; a brother, Floyd, Nowata; 16 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the Nowata EMS 10-33 Emergency Team, 321 Cherokee, Nowata, Okla. 74048.
