Agencies to split

shelter grant funds

Seven local agencies will share $66,711 in state grant money over the next year to prevent homelessness and improve living conditions for low-income residents.

The agencies receiving funding are: First Step House, Hannah's House, Health Care Access, Housing and Credit Counseling, Inc., Pelathe Community Resource Center, Salvation Army and Women's Transitional Care Service.

City seeks $3 million

in transportation funds

The city of Lawrence plans to ask the federal government for $3 million in transportation funding next year, mainly for beautification projects and building pedestrian and bicycle trails.

The money would come from the federal TEA-21 program -- an acronym for the Transportation Enhancement Act.

The largest single project on the wish list is for about $1.3 million for a "gateway enhancement" along East 23rd Street leading into the city between Learnard and Harper.

City commissioners gave their OK to the funding request Tuesday night and voted to forward the wish list to the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission for its review.

The deadline for submitting the request is Oct. 1.
