To the editor:
Chuck Wooling's article about Lee Ice was long overdue. Lee is an excellent coach and baseball teacher and has been instrumental in holding the Lawrence Legion program together through some tough times. In addition, he has done it to benefit Lawrence baseball players, without personal financial gain.
This past year's high school baseball season was one of Lawrence's best, led by two terrific coaches -- Dirk Wedd and Mike Hill -- and their staffs. The overwhelming majority of their players were Legion players, too.
The Al Ice Tournament was a great success for Lawrence baseball. Al's legacy lives on in the many who helped make it a success. Jeff Miller is a tireless organizer and Mike Hill, Sr. worked voluntarily to assist on the field supervision. The support of the parents and volunteers was a proud moment for Lawrence.
Congratulations to the two successful Legion teams, coaches (Lee, Carl, and assistant coaches), and the volunteers who made it a great season and make Lawrence Legion baseball great. The hustle and fundamental play of both teams throughout the season were a great reward for all who helped and watched.
