You can swim today at the Lawrence Aquatic Center, but don't expect to get your mail delivered.

Many government offices and public services in Douglas County will be shut down today in observance of Labor Day.

Douglas County offices will be closed; Douglas County District Court will not be in operation.

City offices also will be closed today, as will the Lawrence Public Library.

City residents are asked to put grass clippings out with their normal weekly trash pickup. City crews will not pick up lawn clippings today. No other changes are planned in sanitation route schedules next week, according to city officials.

All city recreation centers -- the Community Building, Holcom Park Recreation Center and East Lawrence Recreation Center -- will be closed today. All activities are cancelled today at Lawrence Senior Center.

The city's Special Populations Coffee House for today has been rescheduled for Sept. 13.

Hours at the aquatic center will be 1:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, the last day to swim this year at the center, 727 Ky.

Banks are closed Labor Day. Lawrence Bus Co. buses will not run.

The post office won't deliver regular mail today, although Express Mail will be delivered. Mail pickup from collection boxes will be made according to schedules posted on the boxes.

The circulation department at the Journal-World will be open from 4:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

USA Today will not be delivered today.

Classes will not meet at Kansas University, where all libraries and buildings will be closed. With the exception of the Natural History Museum, which is open from noon to 5 p.m. today, all KU museums will be closed.
