Car runs off road,

rolls near Lecompton

A momentary distraction led to a one-car accident Saturday afternoon on U.S. Highway 40 about a mile west of Lecompton Roadside Park, said a Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

Christian Powell, 24, of Perry told sheriff's deputies she was driving a four-door Toyota Corolla as it approached a curve at about 1:30 p.m.

She looked down to pick up something on the floorboard. When she looked up, she was unable to negotiate the turn.

Powell lost control of the vehicle and it rolled into a ditch winding up on its wheels.

Powell and a 3-year-old child, Brenden Hecker, also of Perry, were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. No citations were issued.

An LMH spokeswoman said she had no record of Powell being admitted to the emergency room, but Hecker was admitted to emergency and released.
