On Sept. 4, 1899, the Lawrence World noted: "At last the Kansas soldiers are enroute home. It is not because Kansas is unpatriotic that the boys were wanted home but because it was felt that they had done fighting enough for one regiment. The twentieth Kansas has had the brunt of the battles, has been four months on the firing line and when they get home they will receive such a welcome as will reverberate for years."
