Lawrence's largest bank is getting a new employee to help it grow even larger.
Joan Golden starts Tuesday as senior vice president-development for Mercantile Bank-Lawrence. She will be responsible for handling activities intended to promote the company's growth and attract new business.
The Lawrence resident will be a member of the bank's senior management team, in a new job created by Chuck Warner, bank president.
"We want to take advantage of her reputation and visibility in the community," Warner said Friday. "She's a wonderful asset."
The bank, with six branches and about 125 employees, is Lawrence's largest. It is owned by Mercantile Bancorporation Inc., a St. Louis-based holding company with $36 billion in assets and more than 600 locations in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Arkansas and Kentucky.
Later this month Mercantile banks will merge with Firstar, another bank company with a community focus, Warner said. He knows Golden will fit in.
Golden has lived in Lawrence for 27 years and started her banking career here in 1984 as marketing director for First National Bank of Lawrence, which later was bought by Mercantile. Her most recent job with the company: state charter marketing director for Mercantile Bank in Kansas City.
She currently is president of the United Way of Douglas County, a member of the board of directors for the Lawrence Business/Education Partnership and a member of the steering committee for the Lawrence Arts Center's capital fund drive.
In years past, Golden has headed the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees and Kansas University Memorial Corp.'s board of directors.
"You have to take advantage of people's talents," Warner said. "Her expertise in marketing and her reputation in the community makes it a natural."
