KU volleyball team

dumps UMBC

Morgantown, W.V. -- Kansas University's volleyball team beat Maryland-Baltimore County 15-9, 15-8, 15-7 on Friday at the West Virginia Tournament.

Senior outside hitter Mary Beth Albrecht led KU with 12 kills to go with eight digs, while sophomore setter Molly LaMere paced the Jayhawks with 29 assists and 13 digs.

"I thought we passed and served well, which was the key," KU coach Ray Bechard said. "It wasn't our best volleyball, but it was a good win against a team which was in the NCAA Tournament one year ago."

The Jayhawks, 2-0, continue play in the West Virginia Tournament today. KU will meet Oakland University at 10 a.m. and West Virginia at 6:00 p.m.

Tourney revamped

Due to Kansas State High School Athletic Association rules, the high school and junior varsity divisions of Free State's 3-on-3 basketball tournament has been canceled. The junior high and grade school divisions, however, will continued as scheduled. For information, call Jack Schreiner or Craig Hershiser at Free State.

Browns waive ex-Jayhawk

Former Kansas University defensive tackle Chris Maumalanga was waived by the Cleveland Browns on Friday. Maumalanga was a fourth-round pick by the Giants in the 1994 NFL draft.

LHS alumni match set

Lawrence High's annual alumni volleyball scrimmage is set for 10:30 a.m. today in the East Gym. Approximately 30 alumni are expected for the scrimmage.
