A former secretary in the Kansas University Office of Minority Affairs accused of misappropriating funds to buy shoes and computers will have to repay the university but probably won't spend any time in prison.
Constance Conboy, 45, on Friday morning pleaded no contest to two counts of misdemeanor theft and one county of felony theft. Douglas County Assistant Dist. Atty. Jerry Little said that, in return for the plea, Conboy agreed to make restitution. The amount hasn't been determined, but Little said it probably will be about $20,000.
Conboy faced five felony theft charges, but the charges she pleaded to don't call for a prison sentence under Kansas sentencing guidelines.
"We're not opposed to probation," Little said.
District Judge Robert Fairchild scheduled sentencing for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 7.
Conboy told KU Police Det. Mike Riner she falsified payroll documents and cashed checks for nonexistent employees of the office, according to testimony at her June 1 preliminary hearing.
The thefts occurred between March 1997 and September 1998.
