THE LAWRENCE AFRICAN VIOLET CLUB has scheduled its fall show and sale from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 12 at South Park Recreation Center, 11th and Massachusetts streets. Members will set up for the event from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. next Saturday. From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on show day, plants and arrangements may be entered in the show. Judging will be from 10 a.m. to noon.
THE KANSAS CHAPTER of the Singles in Agriculture will tour the Leu Farm east of Valley Falls Sept. 11, with a barbecue and dance that evening. THE SUNFLOWER PIECEMAKERS Quilt Guild Inc. is sponsoring its fourth annual Quilt Show next week. Hours are 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday; and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 12 at Riverfront Community Center, Leavenworth. The show is in conjunction with River Fest. No entry fee will be charged, but donations will be accepted. This year's show will feature new and old quilts. Demonstrations will be going on during the show. Displays this year include charity quilts and the guild's opportunity quilt -- Prairie Mariner. The guild store will have packets of this pattern available for purchase. Visitors will vote for their favorite entries with the ribbons awarded Sunday.
ALTRUSA INTERNATIONAL of Lawrence started its 1999-2000 year with a visit from Jane Hart, past governor of district eight. Hart, an attorney at Bryan Cave LLP in Kansas City, was the 1996-1998 governor of district eight, which is made up of Altrusa clubs in Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas and Oklahoma. New officers for Altrusa International of Lawrence for 1999-2000 are Diana Deutsch, president; Sally Brandt, past president; Debbie Schmidt, president-elect; Chris Durflinger, vice president and program coordinator; Betty Parks, secretary; Elois Allan, treasurer; Sidney Roedel, parliamentarian; Mary Robison, historian; Pam VanSchmus, Edythe Leonard and Pam Paden Ramirez, directors; Kathy Fode, who chairs the membership committee; and Barbara Schnitker, who chairs the finance committee.
AT THE LIONS SIGHT FAIR during the Douglas County Free Fair last month, 60 people received free health screenings. Fairgoers also received information on progrms supported by Lions Clubs, including Kansas Audio-Reader Network, Kansas Specialty Dogs and eyeglass and hearing aid recycling. The sight fair was sponsored by the Lawrence River City Lions Club and Lawrence Lions Club.
THE LAWRENCE DUPLICATE BRIDGE CLUB'S Monday night game was the final qualification round advancing to the North American Open Pairs Unit Game competition. The game was a 12-table Mitchell movement directed by Virginia Seaver. The winners in a consolidated scoring were Larry Bodle and Kent McCullough, followed by Bill Schutzel and Brian Baresch; Virginia Seaver and Paul Heitzman; Cathy and Michael Blumenfeld; Dan and Vera Schultz; and Steven Goodman and Elizabeth Nice. Other winners and qualifiers were Robert Solick and Dave Piro; James Gunn and Harry Shaffer; Aziza and Zia Anwar; Glenna and Eldon Herd; Sally Taylor and Shirlie Vaughn; Jerry Sloan and Patt Radford; Lois Clark and Martine Paludan; and Bobbie Figgins and Ann Tams.
