Mclouth McLouth scored 40 points in the second quarter en route to a 46-24 victory over Wathena on Friday night in the season opener for both high school football teams.
"It was good the first half," McLouth coach Gerard Aligo said. "Our defense played real well and the young guys in the backfield gave us a big boost."
Tailback Aaron Gardner gained 106 yards on 10 carries and scored on 22 and 26 yard runs. He also had a 42 yard interception return for a touchdown.
Fullback Matt Kesinger gained 47 yards on eight carries. He had TD runs of 13 and five yards.
Quarterback Chase Coffin completed three of three passes for 108 yards. He completed a 76-yard TD pass to Robert Smith and connected with Jim Ryan on a conversion pass.
Because of the blowout nature of the game -- McLouth led 46-0 at halftime -- both coaches agreed to have the clock run with no stoppages in the fourth quarter.
"We're pleased as far as our running game and did some good things with the passing game," Aligo said.
