This year's High Holy Days schedule will be as follows:
- Erev Rosh Hashana -- A contemporary service begins at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 in the center sanctuary. A conservative service will be at 7 p.m. in the center's social hall.

Redeemer Lutheran
The Rev. J.W. Watson will preach on the theme of Christian discipleship with the sermon "Not WWJD but rather Christ Crucified" Sunday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2700 Lawrence Ave. The text is Matthew 16:21-26. The order of service will be from The Lutheran Hymnal, and Holy Communion will be celebrated at both the 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services. Sunday school teachers for the year will be appointed. Heartland Community
Paul Gray will give the message, "Y2K or EWJ?" at the 11 a.m. service Sunday at Heartland Community Church, 1031 N.H. The accompanying drama is "Phone Talk," and Jackie Cottrell will sing "For Future Generations." A nursery and a children's class will be available.
In the 9:30 a.m. service, Mark Chrislip will continue teaching biblical principles of money management. Sunday school classes for all youths are at 9:30 a.m.

Latter-day Saints
Sunday is Fast and Testimony Sunday for all four Lawrence congregations of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Members are encouraged to fast and donate the equivalent of two meals for the assistance of others in need. Sacrament services begin at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at 3615 W. 10th; 11 a.m. at 1629 W. 19th; and noon at 120 Indian Avenue. St. John the Evangelist
People interested in learning more about the Catholic faith are invited to attend inquiry sessions at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky. The next session, on Tuesday, will focus on sacramentals and the communion of saints. Call the parish, 843-0109, for time and location.

As part of the elevator addition project, a plaza surrounding the new entrance on the north side of the church will include a bricked area engraved with names for memorials or dedications. St. Margaret's Episcopal

"Good News Feet" will be the message Sunday at First Southern Baptist Church, 4300 W. Sixth. The Rev. Tom Stallworth will use Nahum 1:14-15 as the text for this sermon about God's plan to restore his people. Lawrence Wesleyan
The Rev. Nate Rovenstine will explore the Ten Commandments at the 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services Sunday at Lawrence Wesleyan Church, 900 Madeline Ln. This week's topic is the Second Commandment: "You shall not make for yourself an idol."
The congregation begins its fall curriculum for Sunday school this week. Classes for all ages meet at 9:45 a.m.

Local man elected
to St. Paul board
Francois G. Henriquez II, Lawrence, has been elected to a four-year term on the board of trustees of St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Mo.
Henriquez currently is senior vice president and general counsel for U.S. Central Credit Union in Overland Park.
He is a member of First United Methodist Church, Lawrence. He has served on the Kansas Credit Union Council since 1997. In recent years he has served on the board of directors of the Black Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City and of Newhouse, a shelter for battered women, on the board of trustees of Drury College, and on the board of editors of the Missouri Journal of Corporation Law. He has taught a course on banking law as an adjunct professor at Kansas University.
St. Paul School of Theology is one of the 13 theological schools of the United Methodist Church.

The Bible-lesson sermon at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Christian Science Church, 1701 Mass., is "Man." Sunday school, for young people up to the age of 20, meets at the same time.
