KU men's tennis

picks up new aide

Ross Nwachukwu, a teaching professional in Buffalo, N.Y., has joined the Kansas men's tennis staff as an aide to head coach Mark Riley.

Nwachukwu, who played tennis for Riley at Drake University, was an assistant coach for the Bulldogs in 1995-96.

As a senior at Drake, Nwachukwu was the ITA Region V player of the year.

South eight grade

stops Indian Trail

Olathe -- South defeated Olathe Indian Trail, 28-0, in eighth-grade junior high football on Wednesday.

Clayton Kellmerman scored on a four-yard run and also caught a conversion pass from Taylor Parker.

Parker completed a 40-yard TD pass to Drew Cummings. Also, Johnny Alexander scored on an eight-yard run and Joe Crane a one-yard run.

John Davis blocked a punt and Kellerman had several tackles at linebacker. South, 1-0, will play host to Topeka Northern Hills on Sept. 13.

LHS sophs tie

Lawrence High's sophomore soccer team tied Shawnee Heights, 0-0, on Wednesday at YSI. Alex Hoseck recorded a shutout in goal. Josh Lorenzo and Brad Cates were cited for strong play. The Lions, 1-0-1 will travel to Topeka High on Wednesday.

Free State to hold

basketball tourney

Free State High will hold a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for boys and girls grades 4 to 8, JV and high school from moon to 5 p.m. Sept 25-26. The cost is $40 per team with a minimum of four players per team. Registration forms and payment are due on or before Sept. 24. Forms should be returned to either FSHS boys coach Jack Schreiner or girls coach Craig Hershiser.
