Southwest trips

BV North, 20-12

Southwest Junior High stopped Blue Valley North, 20-12, in ninth grade football on Thursday at Southwest.

David Allen scored on runs of 10 and 64 yards and had a two-point conversion run. Brian Seymour scored on a 12-yard run. Nick Giannakis and Kyle McMullen both had interceptions. Southwest, 1-0, will travel to Blue Valley on Wednesday.

Central defeated

by Santa Fe Trail

Olathe -- Olathe Santa Fe Trail defeated Central, 32-16, in ninth grade football on Thursday.

Central scored in the fourth quarter on a 30-yard run by BijaÃ- Jones and 20-yard pass from Jones to Daniel Little. Tyrone Rayton and Jones scored two-point conversion runs.

Jones and Rayton had fumble recoveries and Chris Curry a 20-yard interception return.

Central, 0-1, will travel to Olathe Pioneer Trail next Thursday.

LHS sophomores

stop SM North

Lawrence High's sophomore football team defeated SM North, 43-7, on Thursday at LHS.

Bill Peterson scored on runs of three and one yards and had a two-point conversion run. Ian Higgins scored on a 63-yard run and Joe Bell a 60-yard burst. Dallas Worley had a 95-yard interception return for a score. Also, Andy Flory had a one-yard TD run and Kyle Coleman three extra point kicks. Another conversion was recorded on a pass from Chris Johnson to Brian Allen. Earl Robinson and Nick Dannevick had fumble recoveries for LHS. The Lions (1-0) will travel to Manhattan next Thursday.

West falls, 22-6

Olathe -- California Trail defeated West, 22-6, in ninth grade football Thursday. Joe Aber had a five-yard touchdown run, while quarterback Matt Berner threw for 105 yards. Keith Wooden had an interception and Matt Lane a fumble recovery. West (0-1) will meet Olathe Indian Trail next Thursday at West.

FSHS sophs defeated

Olathe -- Olathe North stopped Free State's sophomores, 20-7, on Thursday. Walker Douglas scored on a four-yard run with the score set up by a 20-yard run by Andron Cruse. FSHS (0-1) will meet Olathe South next Thursday at FSHS.

SW stops Frontier Trail

Olathe -- Southwest defeated Frontier Trail, 6-0, on Thursday in eighth grade football. Will Thomas scored on a one-yard run. Thomas, Marcus Murphy and Ryan Engel had interceptions. Southwest will meet Pioneer Trail a week from Tuesday at SW.

South pummels

Rockhurst, 38-0

Kansas City, Mo. -- South Junior High's ninth-grade football team rolled to a 38-0 victory over Rockhurst's B team in the season opener on Thursday.

Scoring for the Cougars was: Brandon McAnderson, 75-yard kickoff return; Brandon Womack, 10-yard pass to Brian Craig; Chris Fulton, 65-yard punt return; Womack, one-yard run; Dominick Harrell, 10-yard run. Harrell and Ryan Heyer had conversion runs. Womack threw to Derrick Newman for another conversion. South also had a safety.

Bobby Brubaker had a blocked punt, Matt Johnson had an interception and Simon Barnes had a fumble recovery.

South (1-1) will play next Thursday at Olathe Frontier Trail.

Free State JV 3-0

Free State's junior varsity volleyball team defeated Ottawa 15-12, 15-7; Overland Park Aquinas 15-11, 11-15, 15-11 and Blue Valley Northwest, 15-12, 15-12, on Thursday at Free State.

BHS boys, girls sweep

cross country meet

Garnett -- Baldwin High's boys and girls cross country teams opened the season on Thursday with a sweep of the Anderson County Invitational.

BHS sophomore Matt Noonan won the 5-kilometer boys race in 16:54. The Bulldog boys compiled 57 points and Eudora finished second at 138.

In the girls' 2-mile race, BHS junior Megan Noonan, Matt's sister, placed second in 12:18. Teammate Shawna Trarbach finished fourth in 13:24. The Bulldog girls won with 61 points and Council Grove was second with 75.
