Memorial services for Robert Tweed Hersh, 71, Lawrence, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Private burial will be in Pioneer Cemetery.
Mr. Hersh died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born Oct. 22, 1927, in Cleveland, the son of Amos and Roselle Hersh. He graduated from Columbia College in New York City in 1947, earned his master's degree from Columbia College in 1951, and completed his doctorate in biophysics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1956.
Mr. Hersh was a professor of biochemistry at Kansas University from 1958 to 1996, and chairman of the biochemistry department from 1971 to 1978.
He won the National Institutes of Health Career Development Award 1960-1970, and KU's Chancellors Club Career Teaching Award in 1991. He received KU's Outstanding Progressive Educator Award in 1990.
He married Sally Six on Dec. 18, 1959, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Christopher Karrer, Portsmouth, Va.; a daughter, Jennifer Newton Hersh, Brooklyn, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the Robert Tweed Hersh Scholarship Fund for Kansas University, sent in care of the Kansas University Endowment Association, P.O. Box 928, Lawrence 66044; or the Lawrence Community Theater, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
