Wint Winter Jr. this week gave up his post as managing partner at Stevens & Brand, one of Lawrence's oldest and largest law firms, to focus on Peoples Inc., his new largest client.
While he will remain a partner in Stevens & Brand, Winter will concentrate on Peoples, a bank holding company with $500 million in assets, 350 employees and more than two dozen branches in 10 communities in three states. The bank has two branches in Lawrence.
He was named the company's executive vice president and general counsel this week, after serving in a similar post for Peoples Bank of Overland Park. His brother, Adam Winter, also is an executive vice president, and his father, Wint Winter Sr., is chairman.
"There was some discussion of me leaving here (the law firm), but I didn't want to do that and I'm not doing that," he said Thursday between phone calls at his downtown office. "I am staying in the practice of law. I am staying with Stevens & Brand. I am still a lawyer. "
"I am going to limit my practice. I'm not going to accept every deal that comes along."
Winter Jr. also will remain on contract as Douglas County counselor, handling zoning and other issues.
Pete Curran took over Wednesday as managing partner at Stevens & Brand, which has a dozen lawyers, eight full-time staffers and three or four others working part-time. Winter Jr. spent four years in the position, which handles personnel, financial and administrative duties.
He has been with Stevens & Brand since 1978, when he graduated from Kansas University's law school. He served as a Kansas state senator from 1982 to 1992.
Stevens & Brand was founded in 1925.
