Kansas Gov. George Docking criticized State Sen. Don Hults, Lawrence Republican, for stating that the state's finances were in such good shape that a surplus would occur at year's end and that the money should be diverted to vital projects such as schools and roadways. Docking, a frequent critic of Hults, said the Lawrence senator was "grandstanding" for Republicans for the next election. And the governor declared that if more students spent more time studying rather than preparing for the popular Rock Chalk Revue they would be better off. Recent Rock Chalk skits had roasted the governor sharply.
