Baldwin Telephone service to three buildings at Baker University was partially restored Wednesday, after construction workers cut telephone lines with a backhoe a day earlier.
Baker spokesman John Fuller said telephone lines to the administration building, library and another building that houses classrooms were cut. More than 100 extensions were affected, he said.
"It's an inconvenience, but it wasn't something we couldn't deal with," he said, adding that many Baker employees used cellular phones. "We were fine."
The construction crew that cut the lines is working on a new student housing building on the north side of campus, Fuller said.
He said a quarter to a third of the affected lines had been repaired as of Wednesday evening.
"In a best-case scenario they will all be fixed by noon (today)," he said.
Callers to Baker heard the following message on Wednesday: "We have experienced severe damage to our phone lines and main switchboard."
Fuller said that in some cases, employees in buildings with working telephones hand-relayed messages to those in buildings where telephones weren't working.
"We're a small enough campus," he said.
