of Tonganoxie woman

A 65-year-old Tonganoxie woman was killed about 8:45 p.m. Monday when she drove her car into the back of a truck on U.S. Highway 73 south of Lansing.

Carol J. Wilkerson was driving south on the highway when her 1993 Chrysler slammed into the back of a 1980 International truck that was slowing to turn right on Hollingsworth Road, according to Kansas Highway Patrol investigators.

Trooper Chris Turner said there was no sign that Wilkerson hit her brakes before the collision.

"It does not appear she ever tried to stop," Turner said. "Drowsiness may have been a factor."

Wilkerson was pronounced dead at the scene. She was wearing her seat belt.

The driver of the truck, 38-year-old Mitchel Dean Elder of Nortonville, was uninjured. Turner said he was making a legal turn.
