J-W Staff Reports
The man accused of robbing a Lawrence shoe store and raping a clerk there in July was arrested late Wednesday in Kansas City, Mo., police say.
Terry D. McIntyre, 37, was arrested by Kansas City police and FBI agents after he lost control of his vehicle and wrecked it, police said. He was with a woman described by authorities as his girlfriend, who stayed in the car while McIntyre fled on foot. A chase ensued, and McIntyre was caught about two blocks away.
A three-week surveillance effort between Lawrence and Kansas City police and the FBI led to McIntyre's arrest, authorities said.
In July, McIntyre allegedly robbed Payless Shoesource, 3231 Iowa St. He is accused of striking one of the clerks in the head with his gun and raping the other.
The crime landed McIntyre on Lawrence Crime Stoppers' most-wanted list and led to a nationally televised plea for help finding McIntyre on the "America's Most Wanted" TV show.
McIntyre was convicted in 1981 of armed robbery in St. Louis. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, plus 10 more years on a tampering charge.
McIntyre was paroled in April 1997 and was scheduled to continue parole until August 2006.
Police said the woman also faces criminal charges.
