On Sept. 2, 1899, the Lawrence World stated: "While some of the corn stories are perhaps slightly exaggerated, there is one peculiarity about this year's crop, everybody has it, it makes no difference how the corn was planted, whether plowed one, two, or three times, or not at all, the corn is good everywhere. Everybody in Kansas talks about corn, corn is the usual topic. Corn starts the conversation on the ears. Corn stalks are stacked up at the station doors to show the travelers what immense corn that particular locality has raised."
